The majority of the houses from Afton to Woodland depend on a split-system air conditioner that is more commonly known as central air. These much-appreciated systems offer more than just pleasantly cool air. In addition, they control humidity, air quality, and air circulation inside your home. To do that, many components must work together to keep your house comfortable in the warm summer months.

 MEET THE AC TEAM

It takes a team of a half dozen components to cool and manage the airflow and humidity in your house. These essential items include:

  • The thermostat
  • An outdoor unit with a fan, condenser coil, and compressor
  • An indoor unit with an evaporator coil and fan
  • An expansion valve to manage the flow of refrigerant
  • Ductwork to move the cooled air throughout your home

HOW THIS TEAM COOLS YOUR HOME

At its most basic, the process performed by an air conditioner is to transfer the heat from inside your home to the outdoor environment. This magic process is actually two steps that work in unison to cool your house.

The part of the process inside your house is often called the cool side of the system. Here, warm air is cooled as it blows over the cooling coil filled with refrigerant. The heat from the warmer indoor air is absorbed by the refrigerant as it is turned from liquid to gas. The now cool air is then distributed throughout your home via the fan and ductwork.

The outside part of the process is also called the hot side of the system. Now that the refrigerant is in a gas state, it is compressed before entering the larger outdoor coil. Then the heat is released into the outside air as the refrigerant converts back to a liquid. The large fan in your outdoor AC unit pulls the outside air across the coil, where it absorbs the heat from the house.
